lawn damage from dog urine #788365

Asked April 28, 2022, 11:52 AM EDT

What can I do to prevent lawn damage due to dog urine all year lawn? And secondly, after the long winter there is a lot of yellow in cretain areas where dogs go all winter long. When and how should I treat those spots when also doing the usual steps with mowing, crab grass control, and weed and feed applications?

Houston County Minnesota

Expert Response

Without training dogs to go in certain areas, dog spots will continue to be an issue.  The first step is to dilute the urine. During the growing season dilute the urine with a spray of water.  For spots that develop over the winter and over time, water and reseed.  See the following for additional information.

We have our lawn care people applying pre-emergent crabgrass treatment followed by weed and feed and so on during the months of May – October.  What would be the best time to try to re-seed the lawn fearing crabgrass preventer killing grass seed and so on?

Thanks for all of your help!

Most crabgrass killers prevent grass from germinating for about 8 weeks.  Depending on what was used it could be as long as four months. Check with your lawn care company on what was used and when grass can be planted.  They may need to modify the timing for best results.  See:  https://www.pennlive.com/gardening/2011/04/crabgrass_preventer_and_grass.html
