Using Metal Roofing for a rasied garden bed? #786084

Asked April 07, 2022, 10:33 AM EDT

Hi, I have seen many folks using metal roofing for raised garden beds. These seem to be advantageous, not rotting, should last a long time. Is it safe to use metal roofing to construct a raised bed for vegetable garden? Thanks Kevin

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for reaching out to the UVM Extension Ask Extension Helpline with your questions about using metal in raised bed construction.

According to this article from Texas Extension “Line the bed with an appropriate edging material. Railroad ties, landscape timbers, rock, brick, concrete block, metal and plastic edging, etc. are all commonly used materials in the construction of raised beds.”

Other information you may find interesting can be found at the following Extension links:

Thanks Jeff, I went through the links you sent, some good info.  It was good to see using metal roofing is acceptable.  I was hoping to see discussion on painted metal roofing.  I have some plain galvanized (which is talked about in the articles, but no mention on painted metal roofing), but much more painted metal roofing.  This is painted straight from the manufacturer.  Do you know if it is ok to use painted metal roofing?  the paint is on both sides of the metal.  I see folks using this kind of roofing for their raised beds, but just trying to make sure it is safe and acceptable.

Thanks
Kevin

Hello Kevin,

I do not think it is safe to use painted metal roofing. I am not making this recommendation based on information found via extension web sites. But instead, knowing that paint used on metal contains heavy metals and paint eventually peels, I would recommend finding another use for the painted panels.

I was able to obtain rough cut cedar, not gradable, from a local saw mill five years ago for a very reasonable price. Although I wish I had reinforced the corners, the otherwise useless cedar is holding up well.

Enjoy gardening
