Asked January 19, 2022, 12:39 PM EST

I am looking for information about pruning wax myrtles as to its dormant season and height of prune back. Also what is the expected amount of regrowth after the pruning by year. Thank you

Expert Response

Light pruning of Wax Myrtle can be done any time of the year. It is best to prune them when dormant-being careful not to "box or round" them off. This would ruin the natural shape of the plant which is graceful and arching. It is best to thin these bushes out by removing branches from the inside and head back the other branches. This allows light to enter the center of the pant-keeping the plant healthy. If shrubs are prune in round or square shapes, often the inside becomes deficient in light.

They typically grow 3-5 feet each year.

Enjoy taking care of these lovely plants.
