How to trim and propagate my beef steak erythrophyllum #778276

I have a treasured begonia erythrophyllum with a large (3/4 inch) brown rough stem (rhizome ?) growing outside of it's planter. Can I trim it off? It has a lovely leaf cluster at the end that I'd like to save. Do I place the end in water to grow roots or should I put in airy soil with rooting hormone on it? Can I plant what is left of the brown stem? I really value your guidance- I'm at odds on what to do. Thank you so much- Bonnie Dressen <personal data hidden>

Begonia 'Erythrophylla' ("Beef Steak") is propagated via stem or leaf cuttings. Lightly press the leaf petiole into the soil. Cut off a portion of the stem, with or without leaves, and root it in soil or a small amount of water. These plants do not need extra rooting hormone.
