I have the following in my landscape and this is my first season with them. How do I cut them back before winter?
-Aster
-Torch Lily or Red hot Poker
-Allium
We also have some succulents, like hen and chick and stonecrop in some ceramic pots. Can they be left out during the winter, or should we bring them into the house?

All of your perennials can actually be left up for the winter. If you would rather cut them back, do it after a frost. The plants can be cut to just above the crown. This would make them 2" tall or so.
The plants in the pots are perennial but need extra protection if they will remain in the pots over the winter. Do not bring them in the house. After a good frost, set them on the east or south side of your house near the foundation and cover them with straw or dried leaves. The pots can also be stored on the floor of an unheated garage or other outbuilding.
