Hello. I had to have a locust tree that was close to my house cut down and didn't have the stump ground or treat it with any root killer chemicals. I did not anticipate its resilience - the stump continues to spread and sprout. What can I do to stop the sprouts from popping up? I've removed some large roots but can't get to them all. I cut the sprouts and they grow right back. Is there any chemical treatment I can safely use without killing everything else in my yard? Thank you.

Resprouting from black locust is common. They sucker aggressively once cut. You can treat them as they appear with a systemic herbicide. You can cut the suckers at the base and immediately paint the cut end with a systemic herbicide such as glyphosate or triclopyr. Systemic herbicides are those that are absorbed and move into plant roots, where they kill underground parts to prevent regrowth. Follow label directions for whatever herbicide you use.
