Deer damage has a rough or torn appearance. It does not look cleanly clipped. Unfortunately, once the deer damages the bark, there is little that can be done to repair the tree. Cut off the ragged bark edges with a sharp knife. Take care not to remove any healthy bark and expose more live tissue than necessary. All bark around the wound should be tight. Plastic tubes that have been cut down lengthwise can be fitted around the trunks of trees in an effort to protect trees from future damage. This works best for smaller diameter trees.
Use white or light plastic tubes so it does not produce heat against the tree trunk.
