feeding poultry mealworms #766493

Asked August 09, 2021, 12:08 PM EDT

Is there a limit to how many mealworms is okay to feed chickens? I'm writing on behalf of an OSU Extension client who said her chickens seem to be addicted to mealworms and wonders if she's doing damage to the chickens to continue this practice. Thanks for your help!

Expert Response

The main problem with feeding anything other than the complete feed is that it dilutes the nutrients that they should be receiving from the complete feed. I would not give them more than a small handful a day, and only at night after they have eaten their daily full of the complete feed. The complete feed is balanced for energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Feeding too much of anything else can cause problems.
