Expert Response

The following method works for most maples. When propagating Japanese maples, softwood cuttings are used. Softwood cuttings are taken in spring and early summer from the new season's growth. The cuttings are placed in a sterile soil medium and kept humid for several weeks. New roots develop from the base of the cutting, creating a new plant identical to the parent plant. Dipping in a rooting hormone and bottom heat increase the likelihood of success. The cuttings can also be placed in a humidity area to minimize transpiration.
