How long do Spireas live? #751041

Asked May 20, 2021, 11:34 AM EDT

Hi! I'm wondering about the average longevity of Spireas in general but particularly Spiraea x VanHouttei. I have a large one that is 30+ years old but my internet searches have been futile on how much longer it may live. I'm also curious about records at https://www.eddmaps.org in Michigan that says Spiraea x VanHouttei is invasive. Is there any way to find out if this was misidentified or if the shrub(s) are just so large that they are impeding the growth of natural plant?

Suzie,

I too have been unable to find reputable studies about the lifespan of a Spirea x vanhouttei.  If you have one that is 30 years old and it looks like it is doing well, I think you could assume it will continue to do well.

I have also been unable to find the reference you noted at the website eddmaps.org.  I noted that it said Spiraea x vanhouttei is non-native, but that does not mean it is invasive.  Japanese spirea (Spiraea japonica) is considered invasive in the Southeast US. See https://hgic.clemson.edu>Factsheets 1234.

Enjoy your beautiful shrub.
