Are bamboo plants that have kept invading our yard from the neighbors considered an invasive plant, and are there any rules or regulations we can rely on to make the neighbor take care of the problem? our property is in Molalla, Oregon. Thank you for your assistance.

Expert Response

Thank you for your question.  I am assuming that the bamboo that is invading your property is a running (rhizomatous) bamboo variety (as opposed to clumping bamboo).  Since we are unable to give legal advice in this forum, I suggest you contact your city to see if there are regulatory constraints on growing running bamboo on property lines.  Absent a specific law, your only remedy would be to seek the advice of an attorney.  Here is an Extension article with suggestions about actions you can take short of legal action:  Bamboo control extension question - UC Weed Science - ANR Blogs (ucanr.edu)

I hope this is helpful.  Good luck!
