Hello. Thank you for using MSU Extension Ask-an-Expert with your composting question. It is perfectly fine to use cocoa hauls in your garden as a mulch or add to your compost bin. However, it cocoa in all forms is unsafe for pets if they eat it. If you have pets that like chocolate then you probably want to put your cocoa powder in your compost bin to be composted first and then add it to your garden.
