Bamboo plants used to screen fence- Horticulture #739858

Asked March 19, 2021, 6:58 PM EDT

My son in Lake Oswego has a yard area he wishes to screen.......along a fence. He envisions a tall bamboo green buffer as some of his neighbors have. What type of bamboo (variety) should we plant along the fence? He lives in Lake Oswego.....I live in Deschutes County. I have been asked to make his plan come to fruition. Thank you for your assistance.

Expert Response

Thank you for your question.  The first issue your son should address is whether the City of Lake Oswego has any laws or restrictions on planting bamboo along a property line.  Rhizomatous (creeping) bamboo has been the subject of many neighbor-against-neighbor lawsuits, as it is nearly impossible to contain.  Clumping bamboo is less invasive, but the best control is to plant it in large above-ground containers.  Here is an Extension article on this species:  http://sonomamg.ucanr.edu/Plant_of_the_Month/Bamboo/

Hope this helps your son!

Thank you for your attention.  I have located Bamboo Gardens there in the Hillsborough area
and they seem most helpful in the subject……
I do understand the invasive nature of certain varieties.  And I am aware of Lake Oswego restrictions.
