Mimosa/Persian Silk Invasive in Central Ohio? #739835
Asked March 19, 2021, 4:10 PM EDT
Hello,
I live in Columbus/Franklin County and I have a Mimosa or Persian Silk Tree growing in a pot (about 1 year old). I was thinking about planting this tree but I know it can be invasive in areas like Florida. Is there concern about these trees becoming invasive in Central Ohio? The last thing I would want to do is spread invasive species. If it is not invasive, I would like to see this tree grow further.
Thank you for your help and expertise,
Daniel

Persian Silk Tree (Albizia julibrissin) is not listed on the invasive species list for Ohio. But, this tree is at the very borderline of its cold hardiness in central Ohio - zone 6. This means it may not survive a colder than average winter here. This tree is also very susceptible to a vascular wilt disease that can kill it back to the ground. Persian silk tree is not considered to be a quality plant because of insect and disease problems. There are several cultivars on the market that may prove to be better than the straight species.
