Oak tree catkins #737834

Asked March 06, 2021, 3:04 PM EST

When do the catkins typically fall? Are there any predictions as to when they will fall this year?

Anne Arundel County Maryland

Expert Response

Thanks for your question-

Oak trees produce male and female flowers in the spring- catkins are the male flowers that release pollen. It would be very difficult to be more specific for a timeline, since there are many variables to influence that timing (including different species of oak trees). Anticipate any time from late March through May.

Here is an article from Tennessee Extension about how acorns form- there is a good section (starting on page 1) about oak flowering.
