shallots #725341

Asked September 19, 2020, 5:18 PM EDT

Hi, I tried twice to grow shallots by planting shallots from the grocery store. Both times, absolutely nothing grew. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to buy special ones to plant? Thanks, Angela

Thank-you for contacting ask an expert.

Often shallots grown commercially are treated with a growth inhibitor (maleic hydrazide) to stop the shallots from growing and increase shelf life. You may be able to find some organic shallots that have not been treated in a grocery store, but your best bet it to buy from a garden center or online seed supply. If you know someone who grows shallots you may be able to get a few extra from them to start your own.

Here are a couple of articles with information on growing your own shallots.
