Problem with extensive suckers in lawn for Narrowleaf cottonwood #701619

Asked July 16, 2020, 3:28 PM EDT

I have a mature Narrowleaf Cottonwood in my front yard and after four years, I'm experiencing a lawn full of suckers.  Can I control the suckers?

Expert Response

Hi there.

Narrow leaf cottonwood, Populus angustifolia, is know to produce heavy suckers. Keep in mind, that all of these suckers are connected to the "mother tree," as this is a major way of spreading. So, if you try to add a chemical to kill off a sucker, it could affect the mother tree. There is one product you can try, it is called "SuckerStopper."

It is not cheap, and requires multiple applications, but it may be worth a try. So, to answer you question, it will be difficult to control the suckers.

Good luck.
