Best method(s) for check houseplant soil moisture #681293

What is the most appropriate way to check an indoor plant for moisture? I realize houseplants have different watering needs. I've considered buying a water meter, but many internet sites say they are not worth the money because they measure conductivity and not moisture level. I've also read about using the finger method (push finger 1-2 inches into the soil) to test for moisture) or chopstick method (push chopstick into the soil several inches and check if there is moist soil that clings to the stick). Any advice would be appreciated.

As you indicated, different plants may have different water needs. Most Master Gardeners use the “finger method” you mentioned. Here are some sites describing watering indoor plants:
