Certified disease-free bare root plants #681288

Asked February 20, 2021, 1:04 PM EST

Hi, I'm interested in planting out a patch of strawberries for a market garden and am looking at getting a couple hundred bare root plants this spring. I've heard that I should only be purchasing "certified disease-free plants". I'm wondering how to make sure of this? Is this an actual certification that the nursery should have? I seem to come across nurseries who tell me that their plants are disease-free, but they have no idea what this "certification" is. What should I be asking to make sure these are indeed certified disease-free? Thanks.

Expert Response

Nurseries often have plants tested by the FDA and the local state authority to be certified free of insects and diseases. Often if you're buying directly from the nursery that has grown the plants they will have the certification and be able to tell you or send you a copy of the certification.

You are asking the right question and might have to probe deeper about the origin and certification of these plants.
