Fennel hardiness #678294

Asked December 15, 2020, 3:17 PM EST

I have fennel bulbs growing in my garden. So far they have survived the light frosts we have had. How cold-tolerant is fennel? At what temperature should I harvest them to prevent damage?

Expert Response

Hi- it may be too late. Fennel makes it's best growth during cool weather and can take light frosts. But very cold temperatures will injure the foliage and "bulb." It's best when harvested October through November.

The harvest period could be pushed a bit if your garden has a warmish micro-climate, we have a mild winter, and you cover the plant with a floating row cover.
