midwest prairie grasses #677350
Asked November 14, 2020, 3:44 PM EST
I'm doing research on South Dakota Prairie Grass and I want to know
1) what plant varieties grow in SD,
2) how long (or what criteria is needed) before a prairie field is certified true prairie,
3) If someone was to cut sod from a prairie grass field, will it grow back with the same plant species, and will that new growth be considered true prairie grass?
Thank you in advance for your time and expertise.

Expert Response
Hi Darla,
You would be better off talking to someone from your state's land-grant university about this. I would start with Anthony Bly with SDSU Extension. He is a soil scientist and should be able to address your questions. He has some expertise in switchgrass. If he doesn't know he is connected to Extension specialists from land-grant universities in states around South Dakota that can answer your questions. His contact information can be found at https://extension.sdstate.edu/about/our-experts/anthony-bly.
