Hostas - Slugs or Cutworms? #675691

Hi. I've been having issues with my hostas for a few years. I looked on the website - would this be from slugs or cutworms? What would be the best way to prevent them from feeding on my hostas?

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension.

Those holes sure look like slug damage.   Slugs will overwinter in the soil as eggs so chances are that you will have the same problem in that area of the garden next year.  

This fall remove all dead plant material after the first hard frost, and if present, remove the mulch.  In the spring, after the snow is gone you can sprinkle so slug deterrents like Sluggo.   

In the future when replacing hostas, go with those that are less susceptible to slug damage....the ones with thicker leaves.
