Best Time of Year to Trim Shrubs #670737

Asked July 30, 2020, 12:27 PM EDT

When is the best time of year to prune or trim the following shrubs: 1) Cotoneaster - hedge shrub 2) Magnolia - flowering in very early spring followed by green foliage the rest of the summer

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

Prune the cotoneaster in early spring, then again midsummer. Prune to shape the hedge, usually wider at the bottom than the top.

Mature magnolias usually don't need pruning, but if you must, prune them right after bloom. If you prune now, you will lose blooms on what you pruned for next year.

Thanks for the quick response Dennis.  I better get busy on the cotoneaster and wait until next spring to shape up the magnolia.
