What is wrong with my zucchini? (Brown spots) #655618

Asked June 24, 2020, 5:00 PM EDT

My zucchini plant has brown spots on the leaves with green veins. I don't see any bugs. It is grown in a large container. Can you tell me what the problem is?

Expert Response

Hello there,

The problem appears to be powdery mildew a type of fungus. Is it talcum powder like?
If it is powdery mildew, it is extremely contagious to other squash plants. (There are many different type of powdery mildew, and they tend to be host specific.)

Powdery mildew infects pretty much everyone's squash plants. You just need to manage it. You can manage it by keeping water off the leaves and watering during the day, not at night. You can also prune out diseased leaves, as long as it's not too much of the plant. In severe cases, you could apply an herbicide.

Thank you for your reply. I don't see the powder of the powdery mildew like I have seen in recent years, plus it seemed early in the year for that problem. I thought it might be some sort of deficiency. I will treat for powdery mildew and see if it improves.

Thank you,
Julia
