Planting Calculator and Mulch for Vinca #647630

Asked June 08, 2020, 9:29 AM EDT

How many vinca minor plants do I plant for a sloped 1800 square foot area?  And can/should I use landscaping fabric and mulch or just mulch?

El Paso County Colorado

Expert Response

Hello,
Vinca Minor will need 12 inches of growing space between plants. One plant per sq ft, which would add up to 1800 plants for your area. You could possibly give it a bit more space around 18 inches between plantings which would bring you to about 1200 plants (if my mathskills are ok) Vinca will try to grow roots from the vines that are spreading. It is considered an invasive grower. Mulch will gradually decompose and possible be a good rooting zone for the vinca. "Mulch only" or "weed barrier + mulch" depends on your preference. Weed barrier will reduce the amount of weeds growing from your native soil. Shredded Redwood Mulch applied thick can do the trick too.
Don't forget the irrigation. Your plants will need to be watered in order to get established.
