Tiny bugs everywhere on deck #639681
Asked May 22, 2020, 9:11 PM EDT
We recently built a cedar deck with screened in porch. I noticed a few bugs here and there initially and now they are on everything both inside and outside of the screened portion (both deck and resin rails). I have small children who crawl on the deck and they are annoying. They are microscopic. Is it some sort of infestation that could damage the cedar? How do I rid of them so my kids can safely crawl around? Thank you in advance!

Hello,
From what I can see in your photos, I would say these are springtails. These are small insect like organisms that thrive in moist environments and feed on decaying organic matter. in terms of human health, they are harmless. They do not bite or sting and will not harm your children. They are also not wood destroying organisms. Generally, we consider them to be beneficial decomposers that help to get rid of fungi and other decaying "stuff". You might want to just check that you don't have any moisture accumulating in your new screened in area. If you have a moisture problem and correct it, the springtails will leave as well. The weather has been damp and that helps these thrive. Once it dries out, they should dissipate. You can try to run a fan in the spot where you see them to deter them from being there.
