Yellowing seedling leaves (not only cotyledons) #628680

Asked April 28, 2020, 6:46 PM EDT

The lower leaves of my tomato seedlings are turning yellow. The cotyledons are yellowing as well but I know this is normal. They have plenty of light so maybe overwatering? I also fed them maybe 2x in the last week with a diluted mix (1/2 tbsp per gallon of water). The cotyledons on my Brussels sprouts plants are also yellowing - this is my first time trying Brussels sprouts so I'm not sure if this is normal for them. Thank you for your help!!

Thanks for the question.

It is quite normal for the cotyledons to yellow and drop off as the germinating plant grows.  These cotyledons provided the initial energy for germination but their capacities to do this are limited.  As long as the other leaves on your tomatoes and Brussells sprouts healthy, there is no need for concern.  Also keep in mind that the lower leaves of these plants experience lessening amounts of light as the plant grows.  Yellowing in them is also expected.  Just be sure that you water only when the soil is completely dry to the touch.
