rototilling near large tree roots #617671
Asked March 18, 2020, 11:04 PM EDT
I would like to rototill in my front yard, which also contains a large tree (approx 20ft tall, 2.5ft diameter). Do I need to take special precautions rototilling near the tree roots? They are visible near the tree, and I am guessing they run under the area I want to rototill. I will be using an electric power tiller.

You should definitely not rototill over tree roots, which can extend far from the tree trunk in every direction. You can see more why it is not a good idea here: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/root-damage
If you are trying to seed the lawn, at the most, you could rake lightly and top dress the soil with a small amount of organic matter.
