Rose Branch #611788

Asked January 29, 2020, 12:49 PM EST

Repeat question, I never received an answer...This rose stem (had one flower on it in a vase) has been in water since November. It has a few roots and has some things growing on the undersides of the leaves. Are they new plants? How can we grow them, if they are? Should we plant the stem? Please see attached pictures. Thank you for your help.

Hello. Do you happen to have a photo of the flower? These leaves do not have the typical serrated edges most roses have. If you have roots growing in water it is possible to plant the stem. Since it has been in water for several months you will have to ease the transition from aquatic to soil. Use a good quality potting mix and start with the potting mix pretty damp and gradually let the soil dry out. Going from water to soil will cause stress. The growth on the midrib is likely new stems as the plant is attempting to grow in not normal conditions. The lower photo appears to be something different, perhaps mineral deposits from the water. Use a 50/50 alcohol and water solution and gently wipe it off. I cannot get a good focus on that photo so if it is insects the alcohol will help that too.
