fall reseeding of lawn in Denver #600243
Asked October 01, 2019, 12:13 PM EDT
intention of reseeding and fertilizing and adding compost a couple days later.
However, I have had some things come up and will not be able to do this until around Oct 8th.
Will this be too late for a reasonable outcome, will I be too close to the cold temps that will come
with the winter months for the new grass seeds to have time to get established?
I am also dividing some of my irises. What is the latest date I could transplant the them? Would
it be better to wait till spring?

The best time to reseed a lawn on the Front Range is between mid-August and mid-September, as you indicated. Since we still have very warm weather, you might be all right getting grass established before the first frost--but that is a big "if." Grass seed usually takes up to 2 weeks to germinate, then another couple of weeks to establish roots strong enough to carry it through the winter.
Since you have already aerated your lawn, and if you don't mind losing the cost of seed and water, you could experiment and try to get the seed established. Otherwise, you can also reseed in the spring when the temperatures are still cool.
