Who are these caterpillars on my zinnias? #587249

Asked August 07, 2019, 7:16 PM EDT

I've been pulling off 2-5 of these guys from my zinnias every day.  They like the leaves somewhat but mainly cut off the petals which is very upsetting.  I've been relocating them to some daisies that I don't care too much about but would like them to be gone for good!  However, if they are a beneficial caterpillar, I don't want to hurt them.
Thanks for any advice.

These are a type of armyworm. It is a native insect in Maryland. You can see photos of the caterpillar and adult moth stages here: https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=6296.

They are beneficial as food for birds. You can just pick them off and toss them aside for birds to eat or discard them. You can also check plants at night to see if they are feeding and remove them. We do not recommend a pesticide -- especially since you have flowers in bloom (to protect pollinators that may be visiting).
