Spruce needles in compost #567474

Asked June 05, 2019, 12:41 PM EDT

Is it ok to add dried spruce (Sitka) needles to compost piles? There's a lot of info on pine needles, but not spruce. My compost pile is not hot - I use worms.

Expert Response

Sitka Spruce needles can be added to compost.  Like pine needles, they will take quite a while to decompose so mix them in with the other materials. You can also use them on the bottom of the pile to help air keep flowing to the compost pile.

Thanks for the info.  The  layer on the bottom is a good idea.  My pile went anaerobic earlier this year - that  might help prevent that from happening again.
