Asked April 03, 2019, 11:14 AM EDT

Do King Gold Cypress do well in Maryland. I live in Howard County and would like to plant a group of these on a the south-west side of my house. It would get a lot of afternoon sun. I have heard they do not do well in hot weather.'

Expert Response

We do not have specific growing information on this plant.  We referenced the Manual of Woody Landscape Plant by Michael Dirr regarding the Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Kings Gold', Japanese False Cypress.  This cultivar appears to be new and is not listed.  There are many cultivars of Chamaecyparis.

In general, yellow cultivars  are noted to be adaptable in the heat of Zone 7.  Other references mention that yellow-foliaged types, which must be placed in full sun for best color, are prone to winter burn without protection from the winter sun and harsh winds.  You may want to experiment with one plant as an accent to see if it thrives on your site.  Here is some information from Ohio State https://plantfacts.osu.edu/pdf/0246-272.pdf
