Is my mango tree dying and what can I do for it to survive? #540368

Asked January 06, 2019, 10:57 AM EST

I have two 4 month old mango trees, and I am seeing that the stem is turning brown. The weather around my location has gone from sunny to cold and vise versa. They are always outside and get watered twice a week. Is it normal for the stem to turn brown or what can I do so it won't die?

Expert Response

From your photos it is a bit hard to tell, but I don't think the mango plant is dying.  It might have an insect issue or oedema or both, however.  Look carefully for whiteflies and aphids on the undersides of the leaves.  If no insects are apparent, be very careful on overwatering - too much water when the plant is not growing quickly can cause oedema (bumps on the leaves from the epidermal cells swelling) or root rot.
