How to Keep Squirrels away from the Vegetable Garden #466724

Asked June 30, 2018, 5:32 PM EDT

We have had an ongoing problem with keeping squirrels away from the tomatoes. They pick them and bite them and run across the yard. Is there anything I can put down to try and keep them away?

Expert Response

There are a number of commercially available repellents containing cayenne pepper and essential oils. We don't have any research evaluating their effectiveness.

Fences can help but squirrels are one of the more difficult 4-legged creatures to exclude from garden crops. Another possibility is using one of the new insect barrier  or insect netting products (not floating row cover). These materials will not increase the temperature around you plants and can be used throughout the growing season. They can be difficult to find locally. Try searching online.
