Asked June 13, 2018, 1:42 PM EDT

Edited Friday as I still have not heard back. Thanks.

I found this in my daughter's scalp last night - could someone identify the species of tick this is?

Dear Client,

The the Iowa Department of Public Health will be best able to identify the tick in your picture to species.

My observation suggest that this is the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis. Nevertheless, "It is important to contact your healthcare provider immediately if you develop this type of rash or develop flu-like symptoms within a month of having a tick bite or being in an area where ticks are present."
