Fumigant use in NE Multnomah County, Oregon Prior to 1983 #439864
Asked February 07, 2018, 12:51 PM EST
1. Was there a standard fumigant, such as Telone, that was used by raspberry growers on the south side of the Columbia River northeast of Portland from 1960 through 1982? If yes, what was the fumigant? If a number of different fumigants could have been used, what were they, and did they contain EDB?
2. Were fumigants commonly applied to crops other than raspberries? If yes, what other crops?
3. What company or companies applied the fumigants during that time period?
4. Is there someone at the extension service I can speak to about this subject, and or applicable literature you can refer?

This is a complex question and may require some digging. There is a DEQ document about legacy agricultural chemicals in soils: http://www.oregon.gov/deq/FilterDocs/GuidanceEvalResidualPesticides.pdf
If your question is about applicator exposure to EDB instead of residual issues, that is a different question. There were some historic reviews of Oregon pesticide applications by crops done in the mid-80s through early 2000s. The use pattern of a fumigant like EDB in raspberries would be before the crop was planted to prevent/suppress root diseases. If the field was productive for 7-10 years, it wouldn't typically have received that treatment again until it was either being replanted or after a rotation to another crop. Give me a call this morning or email me directly to visit about ways to find the information you need. Chip

Here is some additional information. There is a 2012 review that I will look to see if I can access through the OSU library. Another major reason for EDB use was for nematodes which can be very persistent soils if they have suitable hosts to feed on. I will look for more information on raspberry use pattern. Chip
