Growing an American Hazelnut under a Spruce #439005

Asked January 28, 2018, 12:17 PM EST

I have a open space at the edge of my W-NW yard that gets fairly decent dappled light throughout the day. The bows of a spruce semi cover it, though the branches are all 12 feet off the ground. I'm wondering if an American Hazelnut could grow here? I know they're not too picky of plants, and I sure think they're handsome, but I don't want to put something here that doesn't have a prayer of survival either. Any suggestions would be appreciated--Thanks!

American hazel nuts will tolerate the site conditions you have described. Although full sun is best, part sun or dappled shade is acceptable. Those grown in full sun produce more nuts and have better fall color.
