Cherry picking on a hill #408600

Asked June 20, 2017, 5:37 PM EDT

Hi there, I have a cherry tree in my backyard that's on quite a steep hill. I don't want to put a ladder near there (I live alone, so a spotter's not around unless there's no other options). Is there a tool that's long enough to reach the high branches with a hook of some kind on the end (or pinchers) that I could use standing on the ground? An odd question, I know. But thought I'd try. :) Thank you. Linda

It seems like the best looking fruit is always at the very top of a tree. There a couple of options for reaching those cherries. You might consider an orchard ladder, (I think you could rent one). You’ve probably seen one and didn’t realize its intended purpose. They have 3 points of contact with the ground so they can be used in orchards on uneven ground. They are very sturdy. I think you might find that it would work well. When using a ladder, face it uphill. You don’t want to catapult head over heels down the hill!

You could also purchase a fruit picking basket on an extension pole. It has metal tines that are supposed to “rake” the fruit from the tree which causes it to drop into the basket. Here is an example. Fruit picking basket-extension. These work well for larger fruit, but I don’t know if the tines are close enough for cherries. I think it would also pull the stem from the cherries which greatly diminishes their storage quality. You would need to eat or preserve them within a day or two. Hope one of these options will work for you so that you can pick those perfect looking cherries at the top of the tree.
