Pinching A Maximillian Sunflower #404950

Several of the sites that have information on the Maximillian Sunflowers recommend "pinching off" when the stems get about four feet high to promote more branching and subsequent heavier blossom production. However, none of these advice-giving folks bother to show a picture of where on the plant to do the pinching and just exactly how to pinch. Some graphic info as to the pinch location and method would be appreciated as left to their own, my plants get upwards of 10 feet tall and require unattractive staking.

Hi,

You can pinch (using your fingers or scissors) about an inch from the tip of the stem to promote branching. You can do this several times during the growing season. You should start doing this at about the time the plant gets to your desired height.
