preventing rust stains from well water #401080

Asked May 19, 2017, 1:41 PM EDT

I've found online information about removing rust, but am unable to locate information on how to prevent rust stains. Specifically, I want to know what to do after showering in a fiberglass tub and surrounds.

In order to prevent rust staining you will need to treat the water from the well prior to it entering the home to remove iron. This publication will give all of the options for treatment that are available. If you choose to treat the water I would strongly encourage you to work with a water professional for the installation and routine maintenance of the system. https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/pnw589

I am not the owner of this house. Rather, I am a renter who is showering in a fiberglass tub and surround for showering with water which produces rust stains. So filters and water professionals are not applicable to my situation; I apologise for my lack of clarity. Here are my specific questions on preventing rust stains: Do I wipe down the surround wall after each shower? Do I have to spray with some chemical every time I shower? Or do I just wait until the rust stains build up and use chemicals? I avoid most chemicals, so this is problematic.

You can wipe down the shower each time, but the stains will reoccur fairly rapidly. You will have to use a descaling cleaner in order to remove the stains once they have become noticeable.

You certainly have the right to inquire with your landlord about a treatment system, as iron can and will affect the life of the appliances and pipes.

Ok, I will research what a descaling cleaner is. Thank you.

The most commonly used cleaner is CLR.

CLR is a powerful formula for dissolving tough calcium and lime deposits and surface rust stains from tubs, toilet bowls, sinks, glass, chrome, fiberglass and stainless steel. CLR is septic safe and contains no phosphates
