dwarf tress and evergreens #397416

Asked May 02, 2017, 7:07 PM EDT

I see dwarf ornamental trees or dwarf evergreen tress next to a house. Will the roots grow into the foundation? What kind of the mentioned trees are hardy and easy to care?

Plymouth County Iowa

Expert Response

Tree and shrub roots seldom cause damage to basement walls or house foundations. Tree and shrub roots grow up to the basement/foundation and then grow parallel to the basement/foundation.

Most tree and shrub roots are found in the upper 12 to 18 inches of soil. Tree roots can damage sidewalks and driveways as they are able to grow underneath them. Tree roots aren't able to grow underneath basements or house foundations.

Compact or dwarf trees and shrubs can be found at local garden centers.  Dwarf conifers are rather difficult to find and more expensive than standard forms.
