I've read that you should nick or abrade each nasturtium seed, then soak overnight before planting directly into the ground. Is this really necessary?

Nicking and soaking the seed over night is intended to speed germination so it is not a necessary step. You might want to experiment and nick and soak some of the seeds in lukewarm water and compare the results. Be sure not to plant into the ground until after the last frost date has passed for your area and space them approximately 10-12 inches apart.
