We think it's order Hemiptera but we're stuck on the id #385673

Asked February 19, 2017, 11:44 AM EST

We found this guy in the kitchen, and are wondering what he is. From Dad's MSU circa 1960 courses, he went online and decided it's probably of the order Hemiptera, but we couldn't get any closer. Can you help? Thanks so much!

You are right about the order! This is a stink bug. Looks like the brown stink bug but it could be a mar orated stink bug which is a problem home invader. If you squished it, there would be a noticeably sweet odor....sickly sweet not pleasant. Good job with the ID!
Thanks so much for your super fast response!!  Follow up question:  how is the stink bug a problem invader? What does it do that's problematic?  Thanks again!!!

They are opportunistic.  Stink bugs seek shelter in winter via cracks and crevices around doors and screens.  Without fail, when I open my windows in late spring, several stink bugs are waiting there to come in the house!  They do feed on plant soft tissue such fruits but the problem arises when there is a volume (any given season) all wanting to enter your home at the same time!!  (Kind of like the Asian lady-bug).
Thank you, that's very clear-- and very unpleasant. But good to know!!  Again, thanks so much for your help!!!
