Can chickens eat grapefruit segments? #365894

Asked September 26, 2016, 2:02 PM EDT

We have a can of grapefruit segments that we aren't going to eat dur to interactions with medications we take. Can our backyard chickens eat the segments? I'm thinking a few at a time, as a treat, not the whole 32-oz can worth at once. Some sites I've researched (backyardpoultry, for one) indicate that chickens should not have citrus at all; other sites say it's okay. I don't want to just toss these grapefruit segments, though I suppose I could compost them. Thanks in advance!

Expert Response

Yes you can feed grapefruit to chickens,  While chickens have a poor sense of taste, they will often reject food items that are high in acid.  Since all citrus is fairly acidic, you may want to try one or two just to see if they will eat it.
