Boston Fern in my house #341074

Asked July 09, 2016, 12:51 PM EDT

I got this boston fern from King Soopers.  The day I brought it home it was BEAUTIFUL.  Now it is starting to shed and turn black.  I didn't repot it.  It is not in direct sunlight.  I water 1 times a week.  Any ideas to keep this little guy alive?

I am trying my green thumb out and want to have a lot of house plants.  I have always had fake ones...but I want to change my house to an indoor zen!  And the first start is getting REAL plants.

Expert Response

Boston ferns like cool places and high humidity. Usually underwatering is the main reason ferns don't do well but with darkening leaves be sure that your pot has a drain so water doesn't sit in it.  Try monitoring water intake- the soil shouldn't dry out too much in between watering it. Ferns also love to be misted with a water spray bottle. They require a little more attention because we are so dry here but worth the effort.
