You can hand pull it or you can use a weed killer.  If you leave the roots it will come back.  There is also a large seed bank from years of jewel weed growing in the soil. Keeping  it from flowering is important so more seeds aren't made.  I am sorry it is daunting, I start on one section and focus on one section at a time to make it psychologically manageable.
I heard today that jewel weed is an annual...so do I have to pull the roots? I hoped that I could just weed whack it down before they flower. I will pull if I have to . Do I have to carry them away so they will not sprout again. We have done this in the past.

Thank you

It needs to be cut off below the lowest node on the stem. This is difficult with a mower. Therefore pulling or weed killer is recommended. Each plant makes a huge number of seeds so it is very important (as you know) to make sure none slip by and make seeds.
