I have grown Kohlrabi successfully for years. The last few years I have noticed that a few of the plants don't form the bulbs where they should, but the stalk just gets thick in a cylinder form. This year all of my plants are like that. Do you have any idea of what is going on?

Kohlrabi may be slow to bulb if it is under stress, such as too much or too little water, weed competition, high temperature, and, especially, overcrowding, which can limit needed light and inhibit bulb formation. Soil should be loamy and not compacted so amending the area every year with organic matter is important. While some varieties can put up with closer spacing, it is recommended to thin to 6-8 inches. If the plants bulb late, tissue may be woody. Keep soil moisture consistent. The last two very cool, wet springs could contribute to stress if soil has been water-logged.
