Greater Celandine infestation -- how to get rid of it? #325363

Asked May 26, 2016, 11:32 AM EDT

There is an infestation of Greater Celandine that has spread quite widely within our wooded neighborhood. I have started pulling the mature plants to control the spread, but there are thousands of new sprouts appearing in the ground from last year's seeds. What is the best way to control these? What type of herbicide would you recommend to use that will not also kill native plants, shrubs, grubs, etc. (if there is such a thing)? Thanks! Mary

Expert Response

As you have found out, it's essential to get rid of the plants before they flower/set seed! Unfortunately there are no selective herbicides that will kill only that plant and not any desirable ones. The DNR recommends hand pulling or digging up before seed set and disposing of in a landfill or by burning, or spraying the foliage with glyphosate (such as RoundUp). But that herbicide will kill anything green, so you must be careful if using that.

IPAW's recommendation for control:
•Manual/Mechanical: Use sharp shovel to
cut root 1-2” below soil surface before seeds
set. Mow several times throughout growing
season to deplete root reserves.
•Chemical: Foliar spray with clopyralid.

Your local county UW-Extension office (http://counties.uwex.edu/) may have other recommendations specifically for your area.
