Shade tolerant erosion control ground cover #317702

Asked April 30, 2016, 8:07 PM EDT

Our backyard in Harford County, MD suffers from large surface water run off from neighboring hills during heavy rainfall. This water runs thru our shade garden and washes much of the dirt and mulch out into our yard requiring restoration 2-4 times a year. What are good erosion controlling ground covers that will spread quickly and deeply to control dirt run off but not exceed their space in the garden?

Erosion can be a complicated issue to solve.  You may want to contact several specialists for more information regarding your site.

There are groundcovers that you can plant but may not solve the problem.  Consider ferns such as Christmas ferns, Hay scented ferns, Maidenhair ferns, and sensitive ferns.  Other groundcovers,  include tiarella (running or clumping), Canadian ginger, Phlox stolonifera, and Pa sedge.
